Congratulations, you've just faced one of the hardest facts in life; the chance that you won't always enjoy the good health you're in today. No one likes to imagine that critical illness can happen to them, but the fact is the risks are much higher than most people would like to admit.

It's a Critical Fact What does this Insurance do?

1 in 5 men and 1in 6 women suffer a critical illness before their normal retirement age.

35% of men and 46% of women who develop cancer survive at least 5 years.

78% of stroke victims survive for at least 1 year.

Bearing in mind the undisputed risks of getting a critical illness, this insurance is certainly the most under-rated insurance around. It pays out a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with one of the many critical illnesses listed on your policy and you survive at least 28 days* after initial diagnosis.

* some insurers specify 14 days

Sometimes Critical Illness Insurance gets a bad press - why?

Around 20% of claims are rejected by insurance companies and this has resulted in some bad press. The two main reasons for this rejection is that the diagnosed illness is not specified on the policy ( CLICK HERE to see a typical list of insured illnesses) or the insurance company finds that the claimant failed to fully disclose their medical history when they completed their application form.

To avoid these problems you should discuss with the expert from Click Life, the actual illnesses and conditions insured by the policy you're thinking of choosing. Then when you complete the detailed application form, tell them EVERYTHING about your medical history. Don't miss anything out. Include every visit to your GP you can remember, no matter how trivial, and of course full details about any referrals you've had to hospitals or Medical Consultants. That way you'll avoid the possibility that any subsequent claim could be rejected.

Life Insurance can be added to your Critical Illness Insurance policy.

There are two good reasons for considering a combined Critical Illness and Life policy. The first reason relates to the Survival Period which is required for a valid critical illness claim. (All critical illness policies require policyholders to survive for a specific number of days following diagnosis of the illness. This is usually 28 days although some insurers have brought it down to 14 days.) If you have a combined Critical Illness and Life policy, then if you died within the Survival Period, whilst the critical illness part of your policy would be invalidated, your Life cover would still pay out. So by having a combined policy you're covered for all eventualities.

Secondly, it might seem strange, but often it's cheaper to buy a combined Critical Illness and Life Insurance policy than just critical illness alone. We don't want to bore you with the details, but insurance companies get tax breaks on their life insurance business which are not available for critical illness insurance. However, if they issue a combined Life and critical illness policy, that does qualify for the beneficial tax treatment and they pass these savings on in lower premiums.
