What if
I die before I have repaid my mortgage?
If you die before your mortgage has been fully paid off, then your debt will pass on to your estate and your next of kin will face the cost of paying back your mortgage.
If the mortgage holder were to die, the mortgage debt will not be written off – his/her estate will have to repay the debt. That’s why you should have life insurance cover. Life Insurance will ensure that your mortgage is fully repaid and your family retains its home.
Most good life insurance policies also automatically include terminal illness cover. This means that if you are diagnosed with an illness/condition from which you are expected to die within the next 12 months, then the insurance policy pays out immediately you are diagnosed rather than waiting for the final outcome. This repays your mortgage and releives the family stress during the remaining time.
You can also get another form of insurance called critical illness cover. This pays a lump sum if the policyholder is diagnosed with one of a very wide range of serious illnesses/conditions such as blindness, cancer, a heart attack or stroke, MS or any other critical illnesses listed by the insurance company. The point about this insurance is that these illnesses do not have to be terminal nor do you have to be expected to die within 12 months – indeed you may continue to live for many many years thereafter.
Finally, you should consider Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance. This pays your monthly mortgage repayments if you fall sick, are made redundant, or have an accident that keeps you from working. This sort of insurance pays your monthly mortgage repayments for up to 12 months.
